Weekend Update

Happy ~~Monday~~ Tuesday lovelies (a little late with the post)! We had a wet yet wonderful weekend here in San Diego. I whipped up a couple of dresses from my new favorite pattern. I did a little saling (estate). Oh, and the big boo and I ran 4 miles. It has been two years since I have hit the pavement running. Bed rest before and after the birth of baby boo really did a doozy on me, my body, and my athletic state. To think that we used to run marathons. We were both dying, but made it through. At first it felt foreign, but after about five minutes it was all too familiar...like riding a bike.

I leave you with my lonely purchase from my weekend of saling. Don't ask me why, but I couldn't leave the estate sale without buying this bonnet.

Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! Jan would be so jealous to know that Marsha had a Pocketbook named after her. I picked up this vintage yardage at an estate sale in La Jolla last year. It was the first time I had ever been to an estate sale in that area, and it will probably be the last. I will never forget how mean the woman working the sale was. Grouch-a-saurus. I hate to say it but she was a total bitty...an old bitty. I remember I had baby boo in the bjorn. He was laughing and smiling, but that wasn't enough for her. Nothing he did could make this lady crack a smile. As a matter of fact I am pretty sure she growled at him. Ok, she didn't but her face looked like she could have.

P.S. I named this the Marsha, because the second I laid eyes on the fabric, I pictured Marsha at her vanity brushing her long lustrous hair. When I was little I had long, icky curly black hair. I hated it and always wanted long, straight, blonde hair like Marsha. F.Y.I., now I have short black hair and I LOVE IT!

LITERALLY! I remember falling in love with this fabric last year, but I never bought any. Not sure why, just didn't. A couple of months ago I stopped into one of my favorite little stores 42nd and Orange and purchased a "bag of scraps". If you are not familiar with this adorable little shop run by a mother/daughter duo, they create "nerdy clothes for cool kids" often from vintage fabric. So I thought perfect (!), I will scoop up some scraps and see what I can create. Well low and behold there was a large bunch of the button fabric that I had once adored.

If you are in the San Diego area you must stop by 42nd and Orange, and visit M.O.M. Tell the ladies bink & boo sent you!

You might be thinking that the name Bronson sounds familiar. Well, it's the name of baby boo. Once we finished making these booties, they were so cute we had to name them after our little muse.

Does the print look familiar to any of you? Well, it's not vintage.... This print is from a Burberry scarf that we found at one of our favorite thrift stores. So while it's not vintage, it does still qualify as a "found fabric". When I bought it I wasn't sure what we would create from it. It wasn't until a few days ago that it happened to be lying next to a seersucker remnant. That's when I knew, I would be cuttin' up the Burberry, and creatin' some booties.

Mr. MacMurray meet Douglas

As in Steve Douglas, the dad on "My Three Sons". This one time vintage button down instantly reminded me of Fred MacMurray's character. Back when I was a kid, not too long ago, we didn't have cable. I remember coming home from school and watching "My Three Sons", "Beverly Hillbillies", "I Love Lucy", "Dennis The Menace", and "Leave It To Beaver". These weren't my favorite shows, but other than news there was nothing on t.v. Occasionally there would be an "ABC Afterschool Special" those were my favorite. Oh and I almost forgot, "Little House on the Prairie". Matter of fact, I still watch it to this day. It's on at the same time it was when I was little. Awww memories

P.S. Oddly enough I named the booties "Mr. MacMurray" rather than Douglas. There seemed to be an heir of sophistication to them that reminded me of Mr. Fred MacMurray. Sorry for any confusion.

Bobby Brady

When I spotted this cotton remnant on the racks I actually shouted, "Bobby Brady!" I was even more thrilled when I snatched it from the hanger and felt that it was cotton and not polyester.

Sidenote, when I saved this image on my computer I named it Greg Brady. That was my subconscious getting the best of me. When I was younger I couldn't stand Bobby, I thought he was such a whiner. However, I was totally in like with Greg Brady. Oh I thought he was so dreamy. But if you ask me who I prefer now, PETER! Of course I watched his reality show. I can't help it. I think the guy is kind of handsome.

Baby De La Renta

Oh how I love this fabric. Polka dots with a large floral pattern. Funny story about this vintage Oleg Cassini sheet. I created both traditional and kerchief necksessories with this fabric, and named them "baby de la renta." You see, I bought a number of sheets on the particular day that I bought this one, and one of them was a vintage Oscar De La Renta sheet. I got confused (happens a lot) and now it's too late to change the name...I already sent the goods out to some of my retailers. Oh well...sheet happens.

Silly me. I named a bandito bib "baby de la renta" thinking I had created it from a vintage Oscar De La Renta sheet. Well I just realized that it's a vintage Oleg Cassini sheet and I sent the bibs out last week to my retailers. Whoops.

I leave you today with my new favorite pattern. I whipped up dress "A" this morning using a vintage sheet I bought a couple of weekends ago. The result? FABULOUSSSS! I have been admiring a number of dresses at Anthropologie, but at over $150 a pop, it's not really in the budget. So...I have embarked on a mission to make 95% of my summer wardrobe. This dress is the first of four patterns that I bought on sale at Joann's ($1.99 each) last weekend. As I make each item I will let you know what I think, and share the finished product with you. I just need to finish one little thing on the dress, and I will post photos on Monday.

I can tell you what I love most about this pattern is it is VERY, VERY easy, and the dress is super cute and comfortable. It calls for knits only, but I used a light weight cotton and it worked perfect.

Weekend Update

I did a little surfing this weekend. Oh, not the kind of surfing that includes a board, a wetsuit, and some waves. I did the kind that includes a keyboard, a snuggie (handmade of course, not the electric blue one from the box), and a cup of tea (Good Earth sweet & spicy - my fave). We had some serious rain fall this weekend in San Diego, so baby boo and I were pretty much trapped in doors. Check out the latest additions to the bink & boo found fabric collection.

These two groovy girls look like they are ready for the weekend. Me too. This has been one of my busier weeks - I like it like that. I did however take some time to meet a new friend, the lovely Alexis of Fern and Feather. This girl is who I want to be when I grow up. . . AND SHE IS YOUNGER THAN ME! She invited me over for tea (mint with a touch of lemon and sugar) and we gabbed while her beautiful son "love bug" and my baby boo played like little boys do. I love that she had me over for tea. I don't think I have ever been invited over for tea. Coffee, sure. But tea? I LOVED IT!

Cake coma

Hey all. Sorry I am just now giving you an update to my birthday celebration, but I had to take Wednesday off to recoup from my cake coma. Big boo surprised me with a lemon cake from Elizabethan Desserts. Lemon anything is my favorite, but I must admit that we were both a little disappointed in their lemon cake (however their strawberry cake is d'lish!), but that didn't stop me from enjoying 2 pieces (not back to back).

What a wonderful day my birthday was! The family went for a brisk walk and coffee in the morning. I had to take Bronson to his tumbling class, but after that we were off to do a little birthday shopping with big boo! Of course no birthday afternoon would be complete without a cocktail, and I have discovered a new favorite - The Ritz Martini. Oh my is it d'lish! Cognac, cointreau, champagne, and pomegranate juice. I am not a fan of cognac, but I could sip it all day long when it's swimming in conjunction with cointreau, champagne and POM.

I figured a cocktail was a good way to loosen up big boo and his wallet for some shopping. I was right. I had no plans of really buying anything, it's just fun to see what's out there, and drag big boo around with me. But it was my birthday...and I scored!

I have admired this bag for a while now, and big boo took notice. We saw it at Co-Op and next thing I knew it was mine. I still can't believe it. I must admit that I do feel a bit guilty, not sure why. Ok, I know why, it was a good little investment...and NOT the kind we need to be making right now. Oh well, I guess I will be the best dressed in the welfare line. I joke, I joke.

Then I spotted these and about died!

The color! The stripes! Very L.A.M.B. I love, I love, I love! Now? They're mine.

The day came to an end with a good friend and her adorable little pooch coming over to join us for cake. I wish everyday could be my birthday. Thanks to all of you for your warm birthday wishes. I felt the love.

Naked Pomegranate Ritz – created by The Intoxicologist

1 ounce Hennessy

3/4 ounce Cointreau

1/2 ounce Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

2 ounces Naked Pomegranate Acai Juice

1-1/2 ounce Brut Champagne

Combine Hennessy, Cointreau, lemon juice and Naked Pomegranate Acai juice in a mixing glass with ice. Shake or stir for 15 to 20 seconds. Strain into a large chilled cocktail glass. Top off with champagne. Garnish with lemon peel and enjoy!

I tweeted about this the other day, but I realize not everyone is a fan of Twitter. I have been perfecting my pillow skills and have some exciting news to announce in the near future.

The butterfly print is a repurposed, vintage Hanae Morri flat sheet that I scored this past weekend at an estate sale. I love the little orange pillow in front of it - scored two at the same estate sale. The woman's favorite color was...wait for it...ORANGE! It was my lucky day!

Here are some of my favorite vintage Vera napkins and scarves that I have made into pillows. The little stuffed bear, is from a repurposed vintage flat sheet. I thought it would make a cute lil' stuffie - it did!

Weekend Update

What a weekend! I snapped this picture just before I entered this estate sale, where I found my new favorite sweater and a bag of old matchbooks.

(love the color, love the seahorse, and I stayed here once!)

Sunday we ventured on down to the La Jolla Farmers Market. If you are in the San Diego area this is a must! After experiencing this farmers market...Carlsbad f.m, you better step it up! The produce was beautiful. The colors were so rich.

Oh and I found the perfect delivery scooter for bink & boo!

We were only at the market for about 10 minutes before a down pour like no other had everyone scurrying for cover. I had just ordered a spinach and brie panini and was not about to let a little rain come between me and my brie. I strolled through the market and snacked on my soggy, rain soaked sandwich as if it were 70 and sunny out. Then, I made a mad dash for the car and got an earful from big boo about how wet we all were. Not a good thing when trying to recoup from bronchitis.

Yesterday I posted about this bag that I spotted over at Oh Joy, and last night I started sewing and doodling.

(Please excuse my lack of originality, but I have been sick and have made two back to back late night trips to the E.R.). It only took me 45 minutes to whip up the tote and doodle the design. I just used what I had laying around the house. I made the tote, but if you have a cotton tote lying around just use that. I used a black sharpie for the design, not the best choice, but I had to make due (to sick to mosey on down to Joann's). I think it turned out pretty good. I am eager to make orange and yellow bags with white fabric marker - perfect for summer and bink & boo deliveries.

Isn't this print just La La Lovely?! Well I thought so, and this is why I plucked it from a pile of garbage at an estate sale. There was a major, and I mean MAJOR stain across most of this skirt. I guess they thought it couldn't be salvaged. They thought wrong. Hmm, I just realized this is the third time I have confessed to plucking something from the garbage of an estate sale. I swear I am not a freegan, nor am I rummaging through the garbage at estate sales. All the items have been in plain sight and just sitting on top...sort of.

Okay the story I want to share is how this print/pocketbook got it's name. Are you familiar with the lovely Trina McNeilly of the blog La La Lovely Things? Well I stumbled across her blog sometime last year and quickly added her to my reader. Well one post in particular caught my attention. Miss Trina seemed to be having a bit of a rough day. She needed some sunshine and a smile, and she needed it STAT! In the post she mentioned that she like daisies. That's it! I'll send her flowers, but the kind that won't die. I quickly went through my inventory to find the closest thing to daisies and this fabric is what I found. I had planned to make a handful of kerchief necksessories from this print, but what I wanted and what God had planned were two different things.

Miss Trina received the first pocketbook from this fabric so we thought it appropriate to name it after her. And that my friends is how this lovely little pocketbook got its name. Thanks Trina!

The Binky Boo

I am convinced I had a blouse, or my grandmother had a blouse, or my mom had a blouse...dang it someone in my childhood had a blouse made from this fabric! When I saw this hanging in the closet at a moving sale (she was 92, and it was a moving sale and not an estate sale) my mouth started to water, and I felt the sudden urge for something sweet - Starburst. In junior high I always had Starburst in my backpack, they provided just the pick-me-up I needed around fifth period (Spanish). I would pop the candies in my mouth, litter my desk with my favorite ~~color~~ flavor wrappers (orange, pink, yellow), and then gently fold them into the beginnings of a friendship bracelet. Wondering what I did with the red wrappers? I HATED the cherry flavor and would leave all the red candies for the lucky chica/chico that had sixth period Spanish.

P.S. I swear I am not a narcissist. I named this fabric after a nick name my grandfather used to call me because I am convinced that someone in my family did have this blouse...maybe it was my grandfather. HA, just kidding!
