DIY: ankle biters

In the spirit of spreading sunshine & cheer, I thought I would share with you how to make your very own ankle biters. This is the perfect project for recycling old t-shirts*. Here is what you'll need.
...And of course a sewing machine.  If you have an actual pant pattern that you like, feel free to use that in place of the old pants.  Let's get started!

1. With printed side of shirt facing you, fold shirt in half lengthwise, smoothing out any creases and bumps.  Always keep the print out towards you. (This makes it easier to see where you are cutting and to make sure you don't cut into the print/pattern of the t-shirt).  2. Lay the outer edge of the pants close to the fold of  the t-shirt. Be sure to place the waist of the pant as close to the lowest part of the neck of the t-shirt as you can.  3.  Now cut around the old pants using them as a guideline. Give yourself an inch or two (white dotted lines) to allow for proper fit and seem allowance.
You should have 2 pieces that look something like this.
4.  Fold each piece of the pant lengthwise, right sides together.  5.  Sew along the inside edge of the pant (dotted lines).  You've now created the pant legs.
Since these pants have raw edges, they need to be clipped and trimmed.
6.  Now turn only one of the pant legs right side out.
7.  Slide one pant leg into the other, right sides together.  Line up the seams.
It should look something like this. (I peeled back the top piece to give you a little peek at what it should look like when one pant leg is in the other and seems are lined up,  THIS IS JUST FOR SHOW).  8.  Now you're ready to sew the pants together.  It's easier to do this if you remove the arm of your sewing machine.  Sew along the dotted lines at 5/8".  You can double stitch the crotch area for reinforcement if you'd like (I suggest doing this).  When finished you should have sewn what looks like a "U" shape.
Trim close to the seem with pinking scissors for a cleaner look. 9. Now you're ready to take out one leg from the other and you should have....
irresistibly cute little pants! Now, let's make the casing for the elastic. You're almost done.
10. Line up the waist of the pant at the 6/8" mark on the plate of your machine.  Baste stitch around the entire waist.  This creates an easy guide for you to sew a straight line without having to involve measuring tape or the iron.
11. Now fold over the waist, lining the basted edge along the 5/8" mark on the plate, and sew around the waist of the pant leaving a 1/4" opening  (you need to leave an opening to slip the elastic inside).
12.  Cut a strip of elastic (for my 2 y/o, I measure 18 inches of elastic),  attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic, and thread your elastic strip through the waist of the pant.
It should like this once the elastic has made it around the entire waist of the pant.  Now you can remove the safety pin.
14. Sew your elastic ends together, and tuck into the waistband of the pant.
15.  Sew shut the opening for the elastic, and your finished!
Now you have the perfect pair of pants for play or just lounging around.   Please email me with any questions you may have.  I am new to tutorials, I hope I didn't confuse any of you.  I would love to see your ankle biter creations, please email me your pictures.

If you discover sewing little pants isn't your thing, we still have a few ankle biters available in the shop

*The t-shirts used in this project are adult t-shirts.  The size of your ankle biters will depend on the size of the t-shirt used.  For my 2 y/o I use a large or x-large.  I have made these for 4 y/o using an extra large shirt.  It's hard to make these for kids older than 4--finding a "cool" variety of t-shirts available in the size needed is challenging.

Relaxing

Just wanted to pop in and wish you a wonderful weekend!  I will be back next week and in full swing. . .i hope.  This week has been very relaxing, evenly sprinkled with family time and working in the studio.  It looks like that is how my weekend will be as well.  Lots of fun projects happening both personally and professionally, hopefully I have the courage to share some of them with you.

Cheers to a beautiful weekend friends.  Wishing you sunshine & cheer!

Perfect Match: tea collection + bink & boo

I have been seriously crushing on the latest creations from Tea Collection, inspired by modern Mexico.  I have been a fan of their basics (the purity tee's are a favorite of mine...and Bronson too), but they've outdone themselves with their fantastico graphic tee's and Lucha Libre hoodie.  I thought it would be fun to pair a few of my favorites from Tea Collection, with a few of my favorite creations.
tea collection: happy hoodie, native shoes
bink & boo: "el loco" ankle biters

bink & boo: "miyagi" booties
bink & boo: "paco" booties
tea collection: ancho stripe baby dress, (as the temps drop, pair with the skinny leggings --not shown--to keep warm)
bink & boo: "milly" booties

Time

We're coming upon a season of change in our household.  A pretty major one.  (I will share more details later).  So I am going to take some time over the next few weeks to enjoy the source of my sunshine & cheer, my family.  I might pop in here and there, but if you don't hear from me it's because I am so wrapped up in these two cutie patooties that I have forgoten all about my blogging responsibilities.

catch-up

Once again I have fallen behind in reading my fave blogs.  I have over a thousand posts to catch up on.  YIKES!!!  Oh well, my job as COO of Wickers Inc. was demanding this week and there wasn't a lot of time to spare for misc. things such as blogs, pinterest and food gawker.  I sometimes wonder how some women seem to do it all and make it look easy.  Is it really possible?  Bah humbug!

Since I have so much reading to catch up on I thought why not add a little more and subscribe to another blog.  Do you read The Man Repeller?  Holy funny!  Like snort and laugh so hard you might let out a "toot" kind of funny.  If you get a chance check her out, and then come back thank me. ;)

Wishing you a fun filled weekend with sunshine & cheer!

favorite finds + left behind

It's been a while since I've posted about my finds, but I snapped a few pics with my phone to share some of my favorites.  There are a few more that I will share next week, but until then this will have to do.
This purse/clutch makes my list of all time favorite finds.  The colors are so vibrant, this picture doesn't do justice.
Don't hate, but I scored this Le Creuset grill pan for. . .wait for it. . .drum roll please. . .$10!
I added this little lovely to the gallery wall in my studio.

Who doesn't need a pink and gold popcorn machine?!  I would need one if I didn't think it would cost me a divorce.  If I would have brought that home, Roman would have packed MY bags and put me out.  I seriously considered the little red car for Bronson, but I hate clutter and that's exactly what it would have become after 5 minutes.

How about you, any fun finds lately?

refreshing

This post is going to seem out of left field.  I didn't know whether or not to share this with you, but I have an overwhelming feeling that I need to--even though I am having a hard time getting my words and thoughts in order.
I came across a scripture this weekend that really struck a chord with me and reminded me that marriage is a continual work in progress.  The familiarity of marriage is comforting, but it can also cause us to forget those overwhelming feelings of love and refreshment shared in the beginning.

                                                  You are a garden fountain
                                                   a well of flowing water
                                                   streaming down...
                                                             song of songs 4:14

"Partners in marriage should continually work at refreshing each other by an encouraging word, an unexpected gift, a change of pace, a surprise call or note, or even a withholding of a discussion of some problem until the proper time.  Your spouse needs you to be a haven of refreshment because the rest of the world usually isn't." (Source: Life Application Bible, New International Version)

I hope this scripture is as encouraging and inspirational to you as it is to me.  A great reminder of the responsibility of being selfless in a marriage.

Have a beautiful week!  I hope it's filled with the joy and light...sunshine & cheer.

Peace Out

I have so much to share and zero time.  Today the hubs and I are celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary.  We don't have much planned just some good old fashioned time well spent together.

Sunshine & cheers amigos!  Have a beautiful weekend.

Introducing....

Created from super soft, repurposed t-shirts, "ankle biters" are the perfect pants for play or just lounging around.   These are my favorite pants for Bronson!  He has been wearing them ever since I created the pattern for him about a year ago.  And finally, I have collected a small group of  t-shirts that I feel reflect the bink & boo brand.*  I know you will love these little pants as much as I do! Shop the limited edition collection now

* These pants will only be made available a few times a year due to the "hunt and gather" method of collecting just the right t's.

Mi Familia

When it rains it pours...family.  This weekend I took a break from the in-laws to reconnect with some of my own family.  I am embarrassed to say that almost all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins live just down the road in L.A. and I never see them.  As a matter of fact the last time I saw most of them was six years ago.  AY DIOS MIO I should be ashamed of myself.  I am.  Thanks to my dear cousin who reached out to me while visiting SD over the weekend, I zoomed up to L.A. yesterday for a mini family reunion.  I had the most amazing time catching up with most of my tios y tias (uncles and aunts) and some of my cousins.
I learned that my grandma and grandpa met at a bar--my mom and dad met at a bar, and so did my husband and I! (seems to be a recipe for successful marriages in this family).  My uncle shared some pretty amazing stories of when they were little and worked in the onion fields in L.A. (now Whittier) for fifty cents a week.  He also began to tell a story about standing up to his father, but became to emotional and was unable to finish. The best part about reconnecting with my family, Bronson played with his cousins and loved all the attention that he received from his aunts and uncles.  It reminded me of when I was his age and "la familia" was all I knew.  I don't know how I could let so much time pass....  Gosh, like my uncle now I am becoming too emotional to finish that thought.  I'll end with this: I look forward to catching up on time lost.

Have a great week amigos, may it be filled with sunshine & cheer!
