Home improvement

This weekend the hubs finally got around to hanging one of  my all time favorite finds, that mirror. I am really happy with where we decided to hang it, and how welcoming our entryway is beginning to look--now if I can just find someone to upholster the chair without charging me an arm and a leg. (Know anyone in San Diego?)

I found a few weathered metal baskets and a crate at very random estate sale this past weekend.  I think I will use the crate to collect shoes that usually litter the entry way. Now I just need to find some hooks so we can hang our coats and bags as soon as we enter.  Roman wants these, but I am not so sure he saw the price.  Actually I know he didn't.  Suggestions on where we might find something similar at a fraction of the price?

Discoveries

Thank you everybody for your sweet comments and emails on my birthday post, it seems I have more friends in the area that I simply must meet.  My actual birthday was a complete blast!  I spent the morning with a very dear friend chatting over coffee, thrifting, and chatting some more over lunch.  Where ever the wind blew us we went.  It was fabulous, and such a luxury to just be without the little one repeating mommy a gazillion and two times, or interrupting to show me a worm he found, or screaming for me to help grab his matchbox truck he threw deep in the bushes.  It was a very relaxing day that seemed to get better as each hour passed.

Roman made the most amazing dinner: tri-tip from Seaside (a.k.a "Cardiff Crack"), salad, and an amazingly delicious mac n' cheese gnocchi (discovered on this blog, many of her recipes sound amazing).  Somehow after all that I managed to save room for dessert, an assortment of my favorite cupcakes from Elizabethan Desserts.  Food coma.

Although my birthday week is winding down, the year of a new age and new discoveries is just beginning.  I am excited for what's in store, and embrace turning 34.

Have a beautiful weekend!  If you live in Southern Cali brace for rain.  Might I suggest a little comfort food to ease the bad weather blues...make the gnocchi...it's amazing.  I think I am going to make these.

Let's celebrate...

A couple of weeks ago i gathered together an incredibly beautiful, talented, creative, generous, kind, and brilliant group of ladies to help celebrate my birthday--which is actually today.  Truth be told, I wanted it to be less about my birthday, and more of a celebration of friendship and life.  The funny thing about this particular group of girls, I just met them this past year.  And a couple of them I had never met, but I read their blog, followed them on twitter, and basically cyberstalked them, so I felt like I knew them.  I have been affectionately referring to these ladies as my "blogger" friends, because that is how we all met, via our blogs, but now I just refer to them as my friends.

Back when I had a 9 to 5, the only people that were my "friends" were my co-workers.  How else do you meet people when you move to a new city?  You spend at least 9 hours a day with these people, you better get to like at least some of them.  Right?  Come to think of it I am not sure I have ever made a friend outside of school or work.  Is that weird?  I consider myself a social person, a nice person, but prior to last year I never went out of my way to meet people.  Gosh, as I am typing this I realize that sounds kind of cold, and when I think about it...I used to be a bit cold to people who I didn't really know.  I partially blame that on my work environment, but I also know that was slightly my personality before baby.  Side note, having a baby totally changed my life, but that's another post for another day, and I am not quit ready to share that with you just yet--but I will.  I am getting a bit side tract here.  FOCUS Bianca!

I guess what I want to say is that since meeting these ladies I have been pushed outside of my comfort zone.  I have learned to expect more of myself and less of others. I have learned that it's ok to meet new people and not be crazy about them at first, but don't judge or write them off, they have something to share with you, to teach you, and you will end up being more alike than different.  Another side note, I used to pretty hardcore when it came to people, I either liked you or I didn't like you.  A not so nice quality that I am embarrassed to own up to, but I realize I am still a work in progress and trying to change some of my not so nice ways.

The dinner turned out better than I imagined,  I walked away with beautiful memories, stronger friendships, and some pretty amazing gifts.  There were a couple of girls who weren't able to make it and who were greatly missed, but there was one person in particular who I really wanted to be there.  One woman who is the most beautiful person I know, and who has given so much inspiration to so many people, my mother.  The night would have been totally complete if my mom could have joined us.  Maybe next time mom, I know you would love these ladies and they would just adore you.

I would like to thank Michelle, Melissa, Grace, Amber, Kendall, Dawn, Betsy, Heather, Brandi, Julia, Alexis, Karin, and Jenny for an amazing dinner, and for their friendship.  I love you ladies and look forward to another dinner in the future.

Have a beautiful day everyone!

In a nut shell

We spent our entire weekend battling food poisoning...the whole family.  It wasn't pretty.  I felt the worst for my son, who has only thrown up once before and was so confused by what was happening to him.  It was so sad.  On the brightside, we all feel EXTREMELY well rested and completely recharged.

Cheers to a great week and NEVER eating Jello-O pudding again.

Around the web

I thought it would be fun to share a few of my favorite DIY's that I have collected from around the web.  Since the discovery of the sticker machine--yesterday I went and bought another one, a 2.5" sticker maker--I have been scouring blogs for inspiration and even more DIY ideas.  I have always bookmarked different tutorials, but now with Pinterest it seems more fun (and more likely I will actually do them) to collect images and tutorials.  So enjoy, and please let me know what you create.

Fringey Streamers from Jordan Ferney over at Oh Happy Day!  (Her color choices have me drooling over this idea.)

This idea from Tokketok is so simple, yet very thoughtful.
And Martha does it again, thanks to decorating editor Rebecca Robertson and her fabric covered baking trays.  I am going to have to give this one a try in the next month or so.

Packaging

I have been having so much fun creating some new packaging for a project (and possibly a new product); a little wax paper, some zigzag stitching, and lots of colorful fabric tape!  Since discovering the xyron sticker machine I have made a serious dent in my collection of vintage trim--I never thought that would happen.
I know have talked about this silly little machine all week,  and I promise to stop, but I wanted to share with you what I actually created with my fabric tape.  Next, I will try my hand at making cards.

X factor

My latest obsession?  Fabric tape! I can't stop myself.  Ever since I spotted this tutorial last week on 100 Layer Cake, I have been singing the praises of this little machine and its endless possibilities.
The best part...the initial investment is less than $13 (even less with a coupon from Michaels--be sure to print a 40% off coupon from the internet)!  I can't wait to wrap packages, create cards, and who knows what else with with my colorful tape.  Thank you Natalie for your lovely tutorial.

75 and stuck inside

friendship_bracelets

We spent the entire weekend indoors--thanks to the little one being sick.  I guess he never fully recovered from his cold last weekend.  Oops.  In my defense he showed no signs of being sick, it was his fever of 104 that clued me in.  So while my little guy watched Cars and A Bug's  Life all weekend, I stayed busy cutting strips and strips of fabric (literally hundreds) and then braided them into bracelets--it's a little project I am working on, I will share more later.

What did you do this weekend?  Did you find time to create anything?

Making the cut: Diane Von Furstenburg

I finally found the courage to make the first cut into the DVF scarf I found while thrifting last year.
And turned that lovely little scarf into...
...this pretty one-of-a-kind clutch, the"Lizzy".  Perfect as a bridesmaids gift.
....and these adorable baby booties, the perfect gift for any expecting mom.

Thank you DVF for your past creations, and giving me the opportunity to give them a future.
