Le Donk & Scor-Zay-Zee

I am joining Netflix just to see this movie.  Why am I just  learning about this?  Oh that's right...I hide under a rock when it comes to movies and music.  I am the worst.

B-T-Dub I just  saw Youth in Revolt and cried laughing.  Another movie I just rented - not funny - and really enjoyed was Crazy Heart.

Have you seen Le Donk & Scor-Zay-Zee?

Inspiration

There is something about this room that draws me in.  At first glance I am slightly scared, but after a few seconds I am strangely at ease.  How about you?

Ummm yes please.  I am in love with this space.  Just the right balance of color, sophistication, elegance, and cheer.

estate sale escaped part 3: Saturday

Warning: this a long, but fun post.

I have plans to repurpose this top.  The belts are to die for.  I felt like a disco diva the second I wrapped them around my waist.
This vintage scarf is going to make a very cool pocketbook.
I found these folded inside a stack of towels.  Seriously people, you have to find a better hiding spot.  Better yet, when you find something you want BUY IT!  On second thought, please keep hiding it.  I like the feeling of stumbling upon your treasures and swiping them from you.  (insert evil laugh) haaaaaa Haaaaaahaaa, HAAAAAHAAAAA (cough cough - too much laugh, too much laugh).

Ok, now sit back, and enjoy a little story time.

I thought the mister seemed a little swirly when he woke up on Saturday.  For the second day in a row he wanted to get coffee, throw pennies, and hit up estate sales.  One day a week is fine, but two days...IN A ROW!?  Fine with me!  I know I complain sometimes about the mister joining me in my adventures, but the truth is I love having him with me.  He is so much fun, and he adds a certain  je ne sais quoi (I hope I spelled that right) to the experience.  Plus I love hearing him rationalize why I should or shouldn't purchase something.  He is so practical and rational.  I on the other hand...  Well let's just say that he is an accountant.  That should sum it up.

Saturday was my favorite day of the three day estate sale escapades.  We headed down to Starbucks and drank the usual; decaf, tall, soy latte for me and a grande, add shot, frappuccino with caramel sauce added in the blender (it's sooo good, but too sweet for me) for Ro'.  We hung with the "usuals" (some folks we've come to know from hanging out at Starbucks) for a bit, threw some pennies in the fountain with Bronson, and then headed to Vista for our one estate sale for the day.  I had never been to this particular area of Vista, and Roman had never been any where near the area before.  So I was a little surprised by his excitement to arrive at this sale.  As we cruised down the back roads of San Diego county, drinking our coffee, and jamming Jack Johnson (Bronson LOVES him) we were saddened to see a road closure sign up ahead.  We were in the country and knew of no other way to arrive at our destination.  I could not believe it when Roman suggested I just go around the sign and push through to the sale.  Sooooo NOT like him.  Remember he is an accountant.  He isn't much of a risk taker.  Of course in my mind I was already thinking that the road closure couldn't be serious and I should go around it, which is exactly what I would have done if Ro' wasn't with me.  I knew it was nothing major - there was no earthquake, storm, or fire the night before.  So after pretending I was really worried, and feeling uneasy about going around the sign I went ahead and we kept on cruising...until we were stopped about a mile down the road.  We were forced to turn around, but not before I demanded detailed directions for a proper detour.  I am sure the man thought I was crazy, but I just had to get to this sale.
A short ride on the freeway, and few twist and turns down a country road, and we were finally at our destination.  I am not joking when I say I was convinced this was Liberaci's love den.  Where else would you find these...
PANTIES MANTIES!

And this!  Yes, it's a phone...

AND A LAMP!
And this jacket?

Yup.  It's an embroidered tic tac toe print on polyester.  Classy.  Seriously, we would have bought this jacket if it wasn't so stained.  I am not gonna lie, it was pretty cool.

There were so many things that we wanted to buy - for future halloween costumes.  This guy had a collection of ruffled shirts that would rival that of any pirate, let alone a whole ship full of pirates.  We learned the couple were a hair and make-up duo and had done a number of movies.  They were pretty famous and successful, they even had a number of awards including an Oscar.  Or was it an Emmy?  Either way there were talented. I wish I would have taken more pictures.  This couple clearly loved and insisted on living staying in the 70's -  my kind of folks.

estate sale escapades part 2: Friday

Yes, I seem to have a thing for tin lately, but I am now officially over it.  I know I have said this before, but seriously, going forward I am only buying things for bink & boo.  I shop as if I have a brick and mortar, and can resell this stuff.  One day, one day (said in soft whisper).  At least I had the mister with me on Friday to keep me from going crazy.  I had planned on attending this junk fest alone, but  Ro' popped out of bed, and insisted that we go for coffee, throw pennies into the fountain with Bronson, and then hit up the estate sales together.  Yes, this is our idea of family fun.  I am not sure Bronson likes the estate sale part of it, but he sure does enjoy the penny part.

Friday we hit the mother load!  This was the estate sale of all estate sales, I even notified my peeps on facebook to come check it out.  The place was crawling with hard core junkers.  There was so much that I had to leave behind, I couldn't even take pictures.  I would eye something, blink, and poof it was gone.  The second I spotted the Oly beer tray I darted across the room and nearly had to dive for it.  I got my hands on it seconds before a man said I was lucky that I was lady or he would have wrestled me for it.  That gave me a good giggle.  Ro' couldn't help but role his eyes when I showed him why I darted across the room.  As much as I want to keep this for myself, I am sending it to my mom.  She lives in Olympia, and with this tray she will be the envy of the town and all it's hipsters.  She will probably hang it in the front room for all to see as they pass by.  It will be like the lamp in A Christmas Story.

If you live in San Diego, and you see an estate sale hosted by Coast 101 Estate Services, you must drop in.  Best estate sales in California, great stuff, and even better prices.  Plus Ann is the nicest woman, and she makes you feel as if your her oldest and dearest friend.

Estate sale escapades part 1: Thursday

The day began with a trip to the DMV, FOR THE THIRD DAY IN A ROW.  Last year I was falsely accused of a hit and run (total nightmare).  I thought everything had been cleared (last year) until I learned late last week that my license had been suspended.  Oopsy.  I had been driving around for a year on a suspended license AND it expired in February - good thing I never got pulled over.  After spending the better half of my morning and week for that matter, patiently waiting for them to lift the suspension, and take my new picture (which i know is horrible) I was finally free to go and put this whole mess behind me.

I decided to celebrate my victory with a drink - decaf, tall, soy latte - and some shopping - estate sale style.  I cruised on over to a "mobile estate" park in Vista.  I had $10, just burning a hole in my pocket (my dad always used to say that).  I immediately headed to one of the bedrooms where I scored a set of colorful linens and some other fabrics.  I then began to roam from room to room, confident that I had found the treasure (fabric) I was in search of, I could now check out the rest of the place.  I admired the collection of beautiful things that this woman had acquired. She had good taste.  I was curious about her.  Did she have children - why didn't they want this cool stuff?  Where did she live before she settled in Vista?  I could tell by her clothes and her impressive collection of bar ware and serving dishes that she once hosted some pretty swanky parties.  I couldn't picture her doing that in Vista.  To my frustration I overheard her obnoxious neighbors gossiping about her.  They went on and on about how "she" couldn't have had all this "junk" in her place.  JUNK!  What are you two hens cackling about!?  They were so rude and their attitude was ugly.  You don't stroll over to your dead neighbors house to gossip about her...IN HER OWN HOME!  And that's just what I told them.

"Where are your manners ladies?  You don't come over to your dead neighbors house to gossip about her...in her own home.  I could be family.  I am not, but you never know who is around."

Ok, I didn't say that but I wish I would have, then they would have had something to talk about.  I might have bit my tongue, but I let my eyes do the talking and I am pretty sure those two hens got the picture.

Inspiration

I am off to do a little thrifting today and these pictures are offering up plenty of inspiration.  I am just hoping I come across some great fabrics today.  I need more fabric...like I need a hole in my head.

What are you on the hunt for?  Maybe I can find it for you.

just listed. just sold.

I bought these last week and forgot to share them with you. If you like they are now available in the shop.  I wanted to keep them, but I know they will go to a home where they can be more appreciated.  Translation - the husband said they had to go.

Bought this milk bottle a couple of weeks ago (forgot to share this too) and now it's headed off to Australia.  The woman who bought it was so eager to get her hands on it she paid $45 in shipping!  $45!?  Glad I could offer it to her.

Happy

This adorably fun illustration by Kris Atomic makes me happy.  Their wardrobe. Their style. The colors. Love it all!

If only pink hair were really that cute in person....

A cat on a leash?!   Why not!

left behind

I am really into jars, containers and tins lately.  These would have ended up in the shop, but Roman still would have rolled his eyes if I came home with them.  I can't help myself sometimes.

This dress was part of my "catch and release program".  When I thrift and happen uppon something that I instantly like/love, I scoop it up and quickly add it to my cart.  I don't bother inspecting it, I don't look at the price, I just grab and go.  Then, just before check out I edit my cart to see what I really want.  Hence, "catch and release."
Oh I wanted this dress so bad, but there was a slight tear at the armpit.  It wasn't even visible, but the dress was raw silk and I knew that it could tear very easily and spread quickly.  Even thought it was only $5, I didn't want to take the chance.  I am so silly that when I left the store, I stood at the window admiring the dress from a far and wishing it could have come home with me.  DORK!

No lie, I rubbed this when I picked it up.  I know it's not a bottle, but if i were a genie I would want to live in this pretty tin.  Gosh, I might have to go back and see if it's still there.  I am really crushing on it.  There is something about it.  I think it's the colors.  It was made in England, and stamped 1952 on the bottom.

This last one I snapped for fun.  I am not sure if you can tell, but this hand mixer is super small.  The container could maybe hold 8 oz.  What in the HECK could you mix in here?!  Seriously.  The only thing that would fit is an egg...maybe two.  What's the point of going through all the trouble of assembling this contraption to beat a couple of eggs?!  Just crack them in the bowl and whisk with a fork!
I am looking at my KitchenAid as I am typing this.  We've come a long way baby.

That reminds me.  I have a question for you.  If you had to go back and live in the early 1900's, what modern day goody would you take with you.  Are you ready for my answer?  Tampons!  Seriously, of all the things I could take, that would be my one.  I don't know how they did it back then?!

(last) Friday's Finds

The past few weeks have been quiet in regards to thrifting, but this past week I made a triumphant return to the estate sale scene.  Maybe Kendall was a lucky charm.
First order of business, the tin.  The colors!  This was the first purchase of the day.  It will most likely end up in the shop, but for the time being I will admire it on my shelf.

Once again more thread - I really can't get enough of it.

I am totally into gold right now.  I bought 4 different gold necklaces this past weekend - all vintage of course.  The little gold and turquoise coin purse is to die for.  Very sweet.  And the gold glass case is simply divine.  That will most likely end up in the shop too, but I just had to have it.
I scored three awesome vintage tablecloths this past weekend for literally pennies.  I felt bad that the woman charged me so little, but I didn't want to argue with her.  My mother taught me to respect my elders.

Here I go again with more thread.  My goal is too fill multiple apothecary jars with spools of ribbon in similar shades.

I am obsessed with multi-strand necklaces right now.  I got these really simple, but fun white plastic beads for a quarter.  Oh, the fabric that they are laying on was an old casserole carrier that screams bink & boo.

Here is the second of three tablecloths that I totally scored.  This one is vinyl and just waiting to be repurposed.  Into what?  I am not sure yet, but something special is-a-percolating.

The little green plastic cup is one of my favorite finds from the weekend.  For some reason it reminds me of when I was little.  I don't think I ever had anything like this in the pink trailer, but it takes me back to my childhood.

And once again...more thread, and a scoop!  The scoop will for sure end up in the shop along with a few other items, but everything else is just waiting to be revived, reused, and repurposed.

If you are ever interested in purchasing any of the items I post, just shoot me an email.  It takes me some time to add them in the shop, so if you just can't wait email me.

weekend update

I rolled out of bed this morning feeling bloated and a touch disgusted with myself.  Why did I eat chinese food last night when I have to get a new drivers license today?!  Sigh.  I feel so puffy.  I learned late Friday that I have been rolling around town with a suspended license, AND it's been expired since February! What the heck!?!  Long story short I was accused of being in a hit and run last year, but police records and my car prove it wasn't me.  I had no clue the accusers insurance had my license suspended.  Oh well at least if I get thrown in the klinker I have had a good last meal and one heck of a fun weekend.

Friday, Kendall K. joined me for a little estate sale-ing (I don't know how to spell that word) and a trip out to Valley Center for Matilda's Mouse.  Oh my gosh we had a blast!  Kendall, an estate sale rookie (it was her first time) is my kind of gal - up for anything.  On our way out to MM we saw signs for a moving sale (in the middle of nowhere), and took a little detour off the beaten path.  So worth it! I will post all about my finds later. Kendall came up empty handed at the moving sale, but did pretty well for herself at the estate sales (check out her post).  MM was not as crazy as I remembered it the first time, but it was still packed.  I managed to snap a few photos
This would look so cute in Bronson's room.
I am convinced this menu board came from Texas.  Everything is fried or bbq - sounds good.
I wanted the red elephant for Bronson's room, but when I circled around to come back and get it, it was gone.
I wanted everything on these shelves, including the horn, but I left empty handed.

MM was fun, but there was even more fun in store for me Friday night.  The family headed to the Del Mar Fair and I was finally able to snap a pick of Bronson smiling.  He must have really enjoyed himself, and the monster turkey leg he shared with his dad.
Saturday was a whirlwind, a few more estate sales and a baby shower.  Sunday was perfect, a relaxing (we took 2 naps) fathers day.  I am glad it's Monday, and ready to get the DMV checked of my list of "to-do's" today.

Happy Father's Day

I have so many wonderful photos with my dad, but for some reason this is my all time favorite.  I think it has something to do with his attire, and the fact that I remember this day so clear.  We had spent the day at Knott's Berry Farm with my cousin Michael.  My poor dad was exhausted by the antics of my cousin and I - really more my cousin - that he couldn't even muster up the energy for a smile.

My dad hates this photo...for all the reasons that I like it.  So ten years ago when he was walking down the streets of Seattle and saw this photo blown up to poster size and hanging in the window of Barney's New York,  he about died.  His reaction was priceless.  I used to work at Barneys and this picture made the cut for the father's day window.  My dad was famous on the streets of Seattle.

Thanks dad for loving me even when I made it hard to like me.

Dad,

Thank you for all that you have sacrificed. Thank you for your love, your patience, your friendship. Thank you for teaching me the importance of self respect as a little girl and as a woman.  Thank you for being my father.

I love you dad!

Oh happy day

As I am typing this I have one foot out the door.  I am on my way to meet Kendall K. for a little thrift trippin' YO!  We are headed out to Valley Center for Matilda's Mouse, but not without a little pre funk.  And by "pre funk" I mean Kendall agreed to meet me early so that we could hit up a couple of estate sales in my hood before we hit the road.  I thought this girl was pretty cool when I met her last week, but it's official...she is one bad mutha'!

Oh, I almost forgot.  These are some of the records I bought last weekend. I can't keep them all, and think I will throw some of them in the shop, but aren't they fun?

Have a great weekend and happy fathers day!

Matilda's Mouse

What a dumb dumb!  I just realized I posted the wrong image for Matilda's Mouse.  Sorry for any confusion.  Below is the most current invite for this weekend's event.

It only happens once a month, and while it's a bit of a drive it's totally worth it!  Great deals, awesome finds, and a lot of fun!  Hope to see you there!

My latest obsession

I can't stop hoarding collecting album covers.  I am in love with the vintage graphics, colors, and artwork.  Below is an album I picked up this past weekend, and look at all the groovy goodness that was inside.

(sigh) I wish I had my own brick and mortar.

(photo we heart it)

Have suitcase will travel

(sigh) If only it was in the budget.  I am little scared to admit this, especially since I have found myself with a few new designer friends - please don't judge me ladies.  See that "plant" in the lower right hand corner?  I bought it at a yard sale...it's fake (whisper that last part). I know, I know, I know.  I am 100% against silk flowers and would never.  I swear!  But if I so much as look at a plant it wilts, it's only a matter of days after that before it's totally gone kaput.  It looks real...and NOT real fake.  Or does it?  Besides I only paid $2 for it so if someone tells me I need to toss it I won't feel too bad.
Now let's go onto more important matters at hand.  That suitcase!  A vintage Penguin Original.  The colors are to die for.  I love the juxtaposition of the bold graphic print against the soft mint handle and vinyl trim.
I am torn whether to keep it for myself or sell it in the shop.  I really, really, really want to keep it and think I will use Bronson as my excuse.  It's the perfect little travel bag for him.  There I go again talking about traveling.  A vacation is long over due.

P.S. A little photoshop fun and all of a sudden my house looks like the Ropers apartment.  Are you surprised I have an orange wall? I wish it was more bink & boo orange, but it's more Longhorn orange - the hubs picked it.  In the land of USC we're reppin' Texas.  HOOK 'EM HORNS!

The sweet smell of...

...thrifting success.  Who could resist a vintage jar of Johnson's baby cream?  NOT I, and not without a couple of girls commenting on how "gross" it was that I would buy "old baby stuff" (said in your best valley girl accent). I found no need to defend, explain or even bother wasting my breath on these two.  One was wearing a zip up hoody with BEBE blinged across the front, and the other wore a pair of pink velour sweats that read JUICY across the back - and by back I mean but.  I didn't even know they made those any more.   Rookies.

In case you are wondering, this jar has been barely used, and after all these years the cream still smells soft and lovely.  I am not sure what I will use the jar for, but I for sure WON'T be using the cream - no matter how lovely it smells.

I bought these a while back, but I love them so much I just had to share them with you. The colors are just dreamy

Balancing Act

I have so much on my plate right now.  I know I am not alone when I confess how difficult it is to balance time and juggle everything that needs to get done.

If you could hire someone to do ONE thing for you in your daily routine, what would it be?  I would hire a maid.  At first I thought I would hire a personal chef, but I love to cook.  It's the dishes I hate doing.  So, if I had a maid she could clean up after me.  Of course she would also make our bed (Bronson would still have to make his own), do the laundry, clean the floors, dust, vacuum, and clean the bathrooms.  Did I leave anything out?

P.S. As I am typing this post a sink of dirty dishes is staring at me waiting for me to wash them.  Yeah, yeah, yeah, I am comin', I am comin'.
